Schloss Kaltenberg

Schloss Kaltenberg is a castle with an integrated brewery located in the Bavarian countryside near Munich, situated on expansive grounds surrounded by dense forest and a medieval moat. The property offers guided tours of the fortress, a restaurant, and multiple outdoor areas to explore.

Duke Rudolf I built this fortress in 1292 as a defensive structure in the region, and over centuries it passed through various noble families' hands. The Wittelsbach family acquired the property in 1954 and has since maintained it as both a residence and operational base for their brewing business.

The castle hosts an annual Knights Tournament on summer weekends, where visitors watch medieval combat, browse craft stalls, and see historical demonstrations come to life. These seasonal events draw people interested in experiencing how nobility once entertained themselves.

The grounds are accessible by public transportation and offer both guided tours and a restaurant serving traditional food. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there are many pathways through outdoor areas and around the buildings.

König Ludwig brewery has operated within the castle walls since 1876, using historical rooms as its production facility while maintaining traditional Bavarian brewing techniques. This blend of medieval setting and active craft production creates an unusual working monument.
