Schloss Dallau, Medieval castle in Dallau, Germany
Schloss Dallau is a medieval castle located in the center of the historical village core. The stone structure features a stepped gable, an eastern tower integrated into an annex, and remnants of a former water-filled moat surrounding the grounds.
The structure was built around 1300 by the Lords of Heinriet as a tower castle and underwent major reconstruction in 1438 when the Teutonic Order took control. This reconstruction shaped the form that survives to the present day.
The castle hosts civil wedding ceremonies on its ground floor while the upper levels accommodate a local music school. Visitors can experience the spaces during cultural events throughout the year.
The castle sits in the village center, north of Dorfstrasse street, right next to the Elz bridge and is easily walkable from the main village area. Access is generally available, but checking opening times ahead of your visit is wise if you want to explore the interior.
During the 1995 renovation, the original basement walls from the 14th century were uncovered and preserved carefully. These foundations, hidden beneath later additions, reveal how the early tower castle was originally built.
