Castra of Zugmantel

The Castra of Zugmantel features stone walls, defensive ditches, and military structures positioned on a hilltop at 455 meters above sea level.

The fort operated from 90 CE to 260 CE as part of the Upper German-Raetian Limes, marking the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Germania.

Archaeological excavations at the site reveal extensive evidence of Roman military organization, including barracks, administrative buildings, and soldier quarters.

Visitors can explore the archaeological remains through a 2.5-kilometer nature trail that connects various sections of the preserved Roman fortifications.

The fort controlled the strategic Hühnerstraße route, which connected the Roman cities of Aquae Mattiacorum and Mogontiacum through Germanic territories.
