Kleinkastell Hönehaus, Archäologische Stätte in Deutschland. Das Kleinkastell war ein römisches Militärlager am sogenannten „Vorderen Limes“ des Obergermanisch-Rätischen Limes
Kleinkastell Hönehaus is a Roman fort in Buchen built with stone walls and foundations that remain visible today. The site has a square layout with simple, strong outlines and sits on a hill at about 459 meters elevation with views across the surrounding land.
The fort was built in the early third century AD and remained in use until about 259 or 260 AD. It was a temporary outpost constructed quickly with simple materials to conduct patrols and protect the border from tribes advancing from the east.
The fort was a place where Roman soldiers were stationed to guard the border and conduct patrols. The remains show how these soldiers used the site as a base, while local people lived in small settlements further away from the military station.
The ruins are open to visitors who can walk around the site and see the wall remains, with signs explaining the former use of each area. Wear sturdy walking shoes since the ground is uneven, and it is best to stay on marked paths to help preserve the site.
Excavations in the 1960s revealed walls built from carefully fitted small stones with fire marks suggesting the fort was destroyed during battle or a hasty retreat. Pottery and coins from the time of Emperor Caracalla found at the site provide clues about daily life nearly two thousand years ago.
