Kelchsteine, Rock formation in Oybin, Germany.

Kelchsteine is a sandstone formation in the Zittau Mountains with a distinctive mushroom-like shape. The rock structure rises about 17 meters high and displays differently weathered layers throughout its surface.

The first sports ascent of this formation took place in 1946 when Siegfried Schreiber reached the summit without artificial aids. This marked the beginning of modern climbing history on this rock wall, which has attracted mountaineers ever since.

The name refers to the cup-like shape of the rock mass, which draws climbers from across the region. Visitors often watch climbers working on the rough sandstone surface while using the different routes on the formation.

The formation sits directly next to the Mountain Express train stop, making access very straightforward. Visitors should know that climbing the rock wall requires experience, while walking around the formation is possible for anyone.

The sandstone layers of this rock wall have varying degrees of hardness, which has created diverse erosion patterns. This resulted in natural indentations and ledges that make climbing here particularly varied and interesting.
