Klausenturm, Observation tower in Mehlmeisel, Germany.
Klausenturm is a 46-meter-tall steel observation tower standing at 835 meters elevation on Klausenberg mountain in Mehlmeisel. The structure provides panoramic views in all directions across the dense forests and rolling mountains of Upper Franconia.
The tower was built between 1969 and 1970 as a steel structure on Klausenberg mountain. Its construction reflects the period when observation points were being established across the region to improve access to mountain viewpoints.
The tower serves as an outdoor classroom where visitors learn about the habitats of local wildlife across different forest elevations. Information panels help people understand how animals adapt to the varying conditions they encounter throughout the wooded landscape.
Reaching the observation platform requires climbing 177 steps, so some physical effort is needed. The platform is open to visitors from May through October, giving you access to the views during the warmer months.
From the platform, visitors can spot four major peaks of the Fichtel Mountains: Ochsenkopf, Fichtelberg, Schneeberg, and Kösseine. On clear days, these distant views help visitors orient themselves and understand the broader mountain landscape.
