Talsperre Dachwig, Earth-fill dam in Thuringia, Germany.
Talsperre Dachwig is an earth dam in the Jordan River valley in Thuringia that spans roughly 750 meters and has gravel reinforcement on its slopes. The structure creates a water basin set within the forested landscape of the region.
The dam was built between 1974 and 1976 to serve agricultural irrigation in the area. Its purpose shifted after 1990 toward nature protection and conservation.
The dam area now functions as a nature reserve, providing essential habitats for numerous water birds and songbirds throughout the seasons.
The reservoir is accessible for walks around the shoreline, with surrounding forest trails that are easy to navigate on foot. The site offers several viewing points where you can take in the water and landscape.
The dam combines water intake and overflow management into a single integrated system, with the spillway built into the valley-facing side of the structure. This engineering approach shows how function was built directly into the design.
