Kloster Weitenau, Benedictine monastery in Steinen, Germany
Kloster Weitenau is a Benedictine abbey near Steinen in the Black Forest with buildings from several centuries. The complex includes the church, a main building, a bell tower, and several auxiliary structures in a rural setting.
The monastery is first mentioned around 1100 and was long under the rule of the Freiherren von Wart family. It later came under the control of St. Blasien monastery and experienced several fires that required reconstruction.
The monastery church is dedicated to Saint Gangolf and displays late Gothic elements from different construction phases. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship of renovations that followed fires.
The site now operates as a specialized clinic for addiction therapy and is not open to the public. Visitors should inquire in advance whether a visit is possible, as it functions as an active medical facility.
The bell tower originally held seven bells, with the last two removed in 1901. Today it stands empty, reflecting how the monastery's role changed through the centuries.
