Kloster Altmühlmünster, Benedictine abbey in Riedenburg, Germany.
Kloster Altmühlmünster is a Benedictine monastery located in a linear village settlement that extends along a country road. The buildings stand at approximately 370 meters above sea level and are surrounded by dense forest on three sides.
The monastery first appeared in written records in the 12th century and was later established as a Benedictine foundation by the Riedenburg Burgraves. The settlement then developed into a village with religious and economic importance for the surrounding region.
The village church takes its name from a term referring to a mill, reflecting the historical importance of water power in this area. Local residents use the grounds for traditional performance plays held every five years that depict the story of Christ's suffering.
The site is accessible via a connecting road from the main road KEH 2, with good access through the nearby town of Riedenburg. Visitors should allow time for walking, as the complex spans several kilometers along the village.
The grounds contain five protected monuments, including the former Johanniter estate with the church of St. Johannes Baptist. This building represents a different architectural tradition from the main monastery and shows construction phases spanning different eras.
