Kloster Belbuck, Medieval monastery ruins near Trzebiatów, Poland
Kloster Belbuck is a medieval monastery ruin situated on a hilltop beside the Rega River near Trzebiatów. The remains display stone structures and architectural elements from its original Premonstratensian foundation.
The monastery was founded in the 1170s by Duke Casimir I of Pomerania, with its first monks coming from a Danish abbey. This established it as a major religious center in the region.
The place became a spiritual center that shaped the surrounding landscape through monastic institutions and village settlements. Visitors can still trace these settlement patterns across the region today.
The archaeological site features interpretative panels explaining the monastery layout, with guided tours available through the local heritage office. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is hilly and uneven in places.
Before the monastery was built, this location hosted a Wendish shrine dedicated to Bialbog, the god of light, which gave the place its name. The name Belbuck preserves this ancient tradition in its modern form.
