Kloster Gnadenberg, Medieval monastery ruins in Berg, Germany

The former Birgittine monastery features preserved outer walls of light brown sandstone with Gothic tracery window openings in its church structure.

Founded in 1422 by Count Palatine Johann I and his wife Katharina, Gnadenberg became the first Bridgettine monastery in Southern Germany.

Between 1470 and 1520, numerous daughters from Nuremberg patrician families entered the monastery, contributing to its influence in the region.

The monastery site opens its doors for guided tours and exhibitions, with the final seasonal opening scheduled for October 13, 2024.

The monastery houses a statue of Saint Birgitta that traveled through Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands before returning to Gnadenberg.
