Kohlberg, Mountain summit in Neuenrade, Germany
Kohlberg is a 514-meter peak marking the border between Neuenrade and Altena in the Märkisches Sauerland region. The mountain's distinctive shape serves as a natural reference point for the surrounding landscape.
An observation tower called the Quitmannsturm was built on the peak in 1893 and has defined the mountain's appearance since then. The tower was restored by Neuenrade municipality in 1986, reflecting the area's long history of welcoming visitors.
The mountain holds meaning for local communities as a gathering place, with the Kohlberghaus serving as a social hub since its opening over 90 years ago. This facility continues to reflect how the peak functions as more than just a natural landmark.
In winter, a ski lift serves a roughly 400-meter slope suitable for beginners and casual skiers on the mountain. During summer, clearly marked hiking trails maintained by local clubs offer routes for various fitness levels.
The Hönne river originates roughly one kilometer southwest of the peak, making this elevation a key water source for the entire surrounding region. Few visitors realize how important this location is for the area's water systems.
