Kordigast, Natural rock formation in Altenkunstadt, Germany.
Kordigast is a rock formation and natural monument near Altenkunstadt in Franconia, Germany, made up of two peaks and a broad flat plateau at the top. The sides drop away steeply, while the plateau itself is relatively level and open to the surrounding countryside.
The area around Kordigast was already settled in the 4th and 5th centuries BC, as shown by finds that suggest the site was used as a place of refuge. In the medieval period, a hermitage was established here, giving the site a new religious role that lasted for centuries.
The hermitage on the Kordigast was converted into a meditation center in recent decades and now draws visitors who come looking for stillness in a natural setting. The name Kordigast is thought to derive from a Middle High German word suggesting a remote or foreign place, which fits the isolated character of the hill.
Several marked hiking trails lead up to the plateau and the peaks, with some sections being steeper than others. Wearing sturdy footwear is a good idea, and allowing enough time to walk around the plateau before heading back down makes the visit more rewarding.
The Kordigast is considered one of the best viewpoints over the Obermain valley, and on a clear day several castles and landmarks of the region can be spotted at the same time from the top. Despite not being a tall peak, its free-standing position in an otherwise flat area makes it visible from far away and gives it a presence that taller hills nearby do not always have.
