Kornhaus

Kornhaus is a restaurant and cultural monument on the Elbe River in Dessau-Roßlau with a circular glass conservatory on its upper floor. The building spans two levels and features a riverside terrace with river views.

Carl Fieger, a Bauhaus-trained architect who worked with Walter Gropius, designed this structure in 1929 to replace an old granary near the steamboat dock. Its riverside location made it a landmark on the Elbe waterfront.

The building displays maritime design through white plaster walls, blue window frames, and red accents that reflect Bauhaus design principles. These color choices and clean lines remain visible in how the space looks today.

You can reach the restaurant from multiple entrances with stairs and ramps leading to both floors. The outdoor terrace is especially popular in warm weather and offers direct views of the Elbe landscape.

The building survived World War II bombings without damage and was among the few Bauhaus structures on the Elbe that remained untouched during that time. Following a 1996 restoration, it now meets German monument preservation standards.
