Wallwitzburg, Medieval castle ruin in Georgengarten, Dessau-Roßlau, Germany

The Wallwitzburg is a castle ruin set on Wallwitzberg within the Georgium landscape park near Dessau-Roßlau. It features brick walls, an observation tower, and commands views over the surrounding grounds from its hilltop location at roughly 75 meters above sea level.

Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau commissioned this miniature castle between 1796 and 1800 as part of the Dessau-Wörlitzer Garden Realm. The project reflected the era's fascination with recreating medieval themes within an enlightened, modern landscape design.

The name reflects medieval traditions, though this structure is actually a theatrical recreation from the late 1700s that appealed to romantic ideals of the time. Today visitors walk through the ruins as if exploring a forgotten place from history, even though the whole thing was built quite recently.

The site is easily reached on foot from nearby Schloss Georgium and sits directly within the landscape park. Wear sturdy shoes since the path climbs uphill and the ruins themselves have uneven ground throughout.

During winter months, the path from nearby Schloss Georgium to the ruin glows with hundreds of candles, lanterns, and fire baskets, creating an entirely different experience. This seasonal display transforms how visitors perceive the place and reveals the site's appeal beyond daylight hours.
