Since 2020 it has belonged to the Dessau-Roßlau police inspection, before which it was under the police directorate of eastern Saxony-Anhalt. Its district covers the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau, an area of 244.75 km² with 79,555 residents.

The building originates from a period of municipal infrastructure development and was later protected as a historic monument due to its architectural importance. Today it serves as part of the modern state police system of Saxony-Anhalt.

Visitors can reach the station during regular business hours or contact emergency services at 110 in case of urgent matters. The central location makes it easily accessible by public transport.

Cell 5 in the basement of the building is where Oury Jalloh died during a fire on 7 January 2005; a forensic report found a skull fracture and other injuries that predate his death. In November 2021 a British fire expert presented an assessment suggesting Jalloh had been doused with petrol and set alight in the cell.
