Monument to Gorbachev

The Monument to Gorbachev stands in front of Dessau-Roßlau City Hall, depicting the Soviet leader in realistic form. The bronze sculpture was created by artist Bernd Göbel and sits in a central public location.

The monument was unveiled in 2020 and honors Gorbachev's role in the collapse of the Soviet system and enabling reunification. His policies fundamentally changed the course of European history during the late 1980s.

Local residents of Dessau-Roßlau funded this tribute to recognize Gorbachev's role in overcoming division. It reflects how the city values his contribution to peaceful change in Europe.

The monument sits in a central location in front of City Hall and is easily accessible on foot. The public plaza allows visitors to see it at any time of day without special arrangements.

This is the first monument in Germany dedicated to a Soviet leader, underscoring the extraordinary nature of the tribute. Its placement in a German city symbolized reconciliation after decades of division.
