Arbeitsamt, Dessau

The Arbeitsamt Dessau is an office building with a distinctive semi-circular form, yellow brick walls, and glass skylights that flood the interior. Six separate entrances lead to concentric office spaces that were organized to process job seekers efficiently.

Walter Gropius won an architectural competition in 1927 to design one of Germany's first employment offices, which was completed in 1929. The building emerged during a period when such specialized institutions were being developed to manage labor market policies.

The building reflects how industrial labor was organized socially, with separated waiting areas and pathways designed for different occupational groups. The spatial layout shows how job placement and worker management were structured during that era.

Visitors can view the building from the outside and explore its functional form and material quality. Guided visits or tours are occasionally offered since it is protected as a heritage monument.

The building featured glass bricks in its waiting rooms, an innovative solution for natural lighting at the time. A clever routing system directed unsuccessful applicants to benefit registration without encountering other visitors.
