König-Friedrich-August-Kaserne, Military building turned student residence in Freiberg, Germany.
The König-Friedrich-August-Kaserne is an architectural structure in Freiberg featuring solid stone walls and symmetrical design from the early industrial period. After comprehensive renovation between 2009 and 2011, it now houses 166 rooms with 320 beds total, common areas, and sports facilities.
The building was constructed between 1906 and 1908 and originally served as a barracks and training facility for the 16th Infantry Regiment of the Saxon Army. After 1945, it gradually transformed into student housing for the Technical University of Freiberg.
The building shows how military spaces can transform into places of learning and community. Today, students shape its daily rhythm, living here while studying at the nearby university.
The building sits centrally on Chemnitzer Street, easily accessible on foot for visitors and students. Its modernized facilities with plenty of common areas make it a comfortable place to explore and walk through.
The building retains its original military architectural features while serving as modern student housing - a rare example of how historical form and contemporary function coexist. This duality appears in every corner, where stone symmetry meets the rhythm of student life.
