Castle Laneburg, Medieval castle ruins in Löhnberg, Germany.
Castle Laneburg is a ruin in Löhnberg that rises above the Lahn River where it exits a narrow rocky valley. The remains show stone walls that reflect changes in structure over the centuries, with masonry from different periods.
The fortress was first mentioned in 1324 and later served the Nassau-Dillenburg family as a Renaissance residence. A fire in 1900 destroyed much of the structure and shaped its appearance today as a ruin.
The site draws visitors interested in medieval history and the connection between the landscape and the former fortification. The ruins relate to the development of the Lahn valley as an important trade route in the region.
Access to the ruins is via Schloßstraße in Löhnberg, with parking near the Protestant castle church. Visitors should expect unpaved paths and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
During restoration work in 2000, workers discovered a valuable collection of historical coins at the site. This find, known as the Treasure of Laneburg, sheds light on the wealth and importance of its former inhabitants.
