Rübezahl-Museum, Folklore museum in Görlitz, Germany
The Rübezahl Museum displays objects, books, and artworks centered on the mountain spirit from the Giant Mountains through various collections. The space includes glass art, porcelain, metal medals, wooden carvings, and historical paper theaters that all relate to this legendary figure.
The museum opened in 2005 when Ingrid Vettin-Zahn made her private collection accessible to the public. The Rübezahl legends themselves originated from the 17th century onward in the Giant Mountains region.
The mountain spirit Rübezahl has shaped local storytelling for generations and appears throughout the collection in handcrafted objects like wooden carvings and painted ceramics. Visitors can observe how this character was represented in folk art and what role he played in the daily imagination of the region.
The visit works best if you budget time for the different collections, as each section shows different perspectives on the Rübezahl theme. Guided tours and lectures help you understand the connections and meaning behind individual objects.
The Rübezahl story traveled across 40 different countries and spread through paper theaters and puppet stages. Many visitors do not realize that this mountain spirit was known far beyond the region throughout much of Europe.
