Schloss Trips, Medieval castle in Geilenkirchen, Germany.
Schloss Trips is a moated castle in Geilenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, built across four islands and made up of a main manor house, two gatehouses, and garden areas. The structures are linked by chestnut tree avenues and surrounded by water on all sides.
Schloss Trips was first mentioned in writing in 1172, making it one of the oldest recorded sites in the area. Over the following centuries the complex was rebuilt and expanded, taking on features from different periods of construction.
The manor house holds baroque interiors from the 18th century, with original floors, wall coverings, stucco work, and fireplaces still in place. Walking through the rooms gives a clear sense of how noble families in this region lived and decorated their homes at the time.
The complex opens for guided tours once a month, which is the only regular way to see the interior of the main building. The former gatehouses are now used as private residences and are not open to visitors.
A seven-story defensive tower with a square base rises from the complex, its crown decorated with brick friezes that are unusual for towers of this type in the region. This detail suggests the structure was built to be seen as well as to defend.
