Kapelle

The Marienkapelle near Bad Kissingen is a church building with a distinctive baroque tower and sandstone walls overlooking Lake Liebfrauensee, displaying detailed architectural elements from the 18th century. An adjacent cemetery with numerous preserved gravestones and inscriptions from different periods lies directly beside the structure.

The chapel is documented from 1348 and underwent major transformation under architect Balthasar Neumann between 1734 and 1738, who gave it its present baroque appearance. This rebuilding established the structure as an architectural landmark of the region.

The chapel serves as a station along the Franconian Path of Our Lady, where pilgrims and locals gather for religious observances and seasonal celebrations. Its role has remained central to the spiritual life of the surrounding communities.

The cemetery adjoining this structure, expanded in 1855, offers visitors insight into different historical periods through its preserved gravestones and monuments. The lakeside setting also invites quiet walks, and the building is easily accessible on foot.

During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, the grounds surrounding this chapel became a battlefield, with numerous casualties later buried in its cemetery. This made the location a memorial site for those who fell in the conflict.
