Mittertor Rosenheim, Medieval gate tower in Rosenheim, Germany
Mittertor is a multi-story stone structure with a wide vaulted passage at ground level and a clock mounted on its face. The building displays the solid construction typical of medieval fortifications with clearly defined floors and functional openings.
The structure was built in the 14th century as one of six defensive gates protecting the market town. Following the major fire of 1641, it was rebuilt and transformed into its current form.
The tower has housed the City Museum since 1895, where visitors can explore exhibits about the region's past and local traditions. The collection shows how people once lived and worked in this area.
The gate is located between Max-Josefs-Platz and Ludwigsplatz and serves as a pedestrian passage connecting the inner and outer city areas. Visitors can walk through it easily, and the museum inside is simple to access.
From 1641 until 1925, the tower keeper and music master of Rosenheim lived in the upper floors. This dual role shows how defense and cultural life were intertwined in this building.
