Marienkirche

Marienkirche is a Gothic church with three naves, the central one extending into an elongated choir while the side naves terminate with polygonal endings. The interior features a marble altar crafted during the late 17th century as a focal point of the worship space.

The church was originally built between 1200 and 1220 as a Romanesque basilica before undergoing major transformation into a Gothic hall church starting in 1390. This conversion established the structural form it retains today.

The church contains the marble altar designed by Giovanni Simonetti and crafted by Santino Caprani between 1694 and 1697.

The church remains closed during winter months and reopens from April onward with regular visiting hours throughout the warmer season. Visitors should check opening times in advance to plan their visit appropriately.

Five colored keystones in the choir area are based on Martin Schongauer engravings and depict religious scenes including Jesus and Mary with the infant. These sculptural elements offer a distinctive artistic detail that many visitors overlook when touring the interior.
