Marienkirche, Waren

Marienkirche is a brick building in Gothic style with three naves and a square tower with corner turrets that rises clearly above the town center. Its interior holds a carved pulpit from the 16th century and preserved wall paintings from medieval times.

The church was built in the 12th century and shows the construction methods of north German Hanseatic cities of that time. Over following centuries it was rebuilt several times, adapting to changing styles and needs.

The building consumed an enormous amount of red bricks, which led locals to call it 'Fat Mary'. This abundance of material shows how material-intensive construction was in that era.
