Merheimer Heide, Park and architectural heritage monument in Cologne, Germany
Merheimer Heide is a large park spanning the districts of Buchheim, Holweide, Merheim, and Höhenberg, with oak, beech, ash, and poplar trees throughout. The grounds contain multiple sports facilities including football pitches and tennis courts, alongside riding areas and open grass spaces.
In 1927, the city council chose to convert the former Prussian military training grounds into a landscape park, directed by garden technician Theodor Nußbaum. What had been a military site became a public green space that continues to serve recreation and sport today.
This space serves as a gathering place where locals practice sports and outdoor activities throughout the year. You will notice people playing football, taking tennis lessons, or riding horses, which shows how the park remains central to neighborhood life.
Public transportation connects to the park from multiple directions, making it easy to reach from around the city. Certain zones have specific rules, such as leash requirements for dogs in designated walking areas.
The northern section contains meadows with cross-country riding trails for horse riders, while the southern part features wildflower beds planted in 2020. These flower beds were specifically designed to support insect populations and create wildlife habitats.
