Palmkernölspeicher, Heritage office building in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Germany.
The Palmkernölspeicher is an office building with strong historical character situated along Rummelsburger Lake, distinguished by its red brick walls with pilasters and floor cornices extending across six stories. Following renovation, the structure was converted into residential units while preserving its original exterior appearance from the late 1800s.
The structure was constructed between 1883 and 1885 by Berlin architect Albert Biebendt and originally served to process palm kernel oil from raw materials. These materials arrived from West Africa and were refined on-site using industrial methods of that era.
The building displays the craftsmanship of the late 19th century industrial period and stands as a witness to that era along the waterfront. Its red brick facade and clear structural lines reflect a time when this location was a hub for production and commerce.
The site sits directly on the water with access to Rummelsburger Lake and offers clear views of the industrial heritage in the area. Visitors can observe the architecture from the waterside and use the location as a starting point for walks along the shore.
The building once had its own ship dock that survived until 2018 and was used by local fishing enthusiasts. This private harbor was a living link to the peninsula's active past as a center for maritime activity and trade.
