Königsgruber Park, Park in Deutschland
Königsgruber Park is a large natural area in Herne located on the site of a former mine, featuring woodlands, meadows, and small ponds. Main paths wind through wild sections while protected zones maintain their natural development.
The park emerged after the Königsgrube mine closed in 1967 on the former mining site. It was officially opened in 1990 as public green space after residents protested against housing development plans.
The space emerged from local residents' desire to preserve a natural area for public use. Visitors use the grounds daily for walks, jogging, and letting pets roam freely among the paths and open spaces.
The park is easily accessible with paved paths for walking, jogging, and cycling through various terrain. Benches are placed throughout, especially near open fields, providing spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
Kite flying and model airplane flights occur regularly on the former mining mounds. An underground tunnel beneath the street connects different park sections, marking where separate mines once operated.
