Rethmoorsee, Nature reserve in Winsen, Germany.
Rethmoorsee is a nature reserve spanning 90 hectares with a central lake surrounded by reed beds, grasslands, and natural forests of oaks and alders. The different habitat zones support diverse species adapted to each environment.
The lake formed between 1983 and 1989 as a result of sand and gravel extraction for the A250 motorway, with the depression later filling with groundwater. This demonstrates how human activity can be transformed into restored natural space.
The reserve functions as a learning site where visitors observe native wildlife and plants from a viewing platform on the western shore. This space shows how people can actively engage with nature protection.
Swimming and water sports are not permitted in the reserve, though designated trails allow visitors to explore on foot or bicycle. Sturdy footwear is advisable, especially in wetter areas near reed beds.
Belted Galloway cattle have grazed the grasslands since 2005, naturally preventing excessive shrub growth. Using livestock for landscape management creates ideal conditions for bird habitats.
