Rothsee, lake in Zusmarshausen, Germany
Rothsee is a reservoir created in the early 1970s by damming the Roth river in Zusmarshausen. The water stretches about 860 meters long and 140 meters wide, with grassy areas, walking paths, and designated zones for swimming and recreation.
Dam construction on Rothsee began in 1972 and took about two years to complete by the mid-1970s. Since then, the reservoir has served mainly for recreation and water storage for the local community.
The name Rothsee comes from the Roth river that feeds into it. The water and surrounding area create a gathering place where local people swim, picnic, and sit by the shore to watch the landscape and birds.
Rothsee is easy to reach, just over a kilometer from Zusmarshausen train station or by car via the Bundesstraße 10. On-site you will find parking, toilets, changing rooms, playgrounds, and grassy areas for relaxing.
A rare feature is the small island in the middle of the water, which provides a resting spot for birds and small animals. There is also a designated dog beach, making it an ideal place for families who bring pets.
