The Kochendorf lock system consists of two parallel chambers on the right bank of the Neckar River with a hydroelectric power station on the left side.
Construction of the first lock chamber started in 1925, followed by a second chamber in 1954, marking a significant expansion of the Neckar River navigation infrastructure.
The lock represents German engineering excellence in water management, enabling continuous commercial navigation while generating hydroelectric power for the surrounding region.
The lock chambers measure 107.7 meters in length and 12 meters in width, accommodating vessels with a minimum water depth of 3.5 meters at all times.
The facility operates alongside a 4.6-kilometer side canal and incorporates a fish passage system to support the migration of aquatic species through the Neckar River.
