Schloss Althörnitz, Renaissance château and hotel in Bertsdorf-Hörnitz, Germany.
Schloss Althörnitz is a Renaissance château in Bertsdorf-Hörnitz featuring two distinctive octagonal towers topped with pointed roofs. The right tower has functioned as the main staircase since 1853 and defines much of the building's outward appearance.
The castle was built between 1651 and 1654 by Zittau master builder Valentin for Mayor Christian von Hartig. Von Hartig introduced greenhouses and rare plants to the region, which shaped the estate's character.
The entrance hall displays an inscription from Christian von Hartig that tells the story of the castle's location and importance. Inside, the rooms reflect the vision of a wealthy owner who shaped how the place looks and feels.
The castle provides 75 rooms and suites, two restaurants, and a bar for guests. The extensive grounds are set near the Zittau Mountains Nature Park, making walks around the property easy to arrange.
The castle sits in the tri-border region where Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic meet, giving it a unique geographic position. From 1948 to 1991 it served as holiday accommodations for FDGB guests, the mass organization of East Germany.
