Schloss Dätzingen, Château in Grafenau, Germany

Schloss Dätzingen is a four-wing building with two-and-a-half stories arranged around a central courtyard, featuring classical architectural design throughout. The castle now houses a local history museum, an art gallery, an auction house, and an antique bookstore that are open to visitors.

The Johanniter Order acquired the property in the 13th century, with the first documented mention of a brotherhood house at the current castle location occurring in 1263. The site evolved from this period as an order residence into an important cultural center for the region.

The Maltese Hall, created in 1780, displays paintings showing battle scenes and depictions of Maltese Order settlements across different regions. These artworks tell stories of the order's global connections and historical importance.

The various spaces within the castle have different opening schedules, so it is worth checking ahead to see which areas are accessible on your visit day. The central courtyard provides a pleasant place to rest between the different exhibition areas.

The castle contains the only complete set in Germany of the Les Chasses de Compiègne panoramic wallpaper, designed by Carle Vernet in 1812. This rare wall covering is a masterwork of early 19th-century textile production.
