Schloss Ebeleben, Baroque château in Ebeleben, Germany

Schloss Ebeleben is a Baroque castle complex with an S-shaped layout set within a French-style park stretching about 300 meters in length. The grounds contain terraces, water features, fountains, and numerous mythological sculptures distributed throughout the entire area.

Construction of the castle began in 1651 when Count Ludwig Günther II converted the medieval fortress into a Baroque palace to serve as a residence for the Schwarzburg-Ebeleben lineage. This transformation shaped both the building and its park layout, which survive to this day.

The sculptures in the garden tell stories from Greek and Roman mythology, showing hunting scenes and figures like Minerva and Flora that visitors encounter while walking the grounds. These stone artworks were created by local craftsmen and remain visible throughout the park today, adding layers of meaning to a simple stroll.

A visit is easy to plan since the Karl Marien House, formerly the palm house and orangery, now operates as a café for park visitors. The grounds are relatively flat and offer multiple areas to explore, with the café serving as a good base for a longer visit.

The garden layout breaks from typical Baroque conventions through its unusual axis arrangement, where the main axis does not approach the castle directly but instead connects to a secondary axis at nearly right angles. This deliberate geometric deviation makes the park an interesting example of how local architects adapted traditional design principles.
