Rundsilo, Cultural heritage building in Eckernförde, Germany

Description

This brick cylindrical tower near the harbor in Eckernförde was built in 1931 as a grain storage facility and rises eight stories tall. Inside, individual compartments stacked vertically held grain securely, with the architecture designed to maximize space and protect its contents.

History

An architect designed this grain storage building in 1931 using New Objectivity style, a modern industrial approach of that era. The city later recognized its importance and designated it a cultural monument in 1972.

Culture

This structure once anchored the port's working life, marking how essential grain storage was to the town's economy. Visitors now walk through the ground floor restaurant and encounter the industrial past layered into everyday spaces.

Practical

The structure is easy to spot near the harbor and sits in an accessible location within the port area. You can enter the ground floor to visit the restaurant and see the preserved interior features while experiencing how the space functions today.

Did you know?

A golden angel perches atop the brick tower, creating an ironic contrast with the ground floor restaurant named Lucifer, which opened in 2008. This opposite pairing reflects how the building has been reused with playful contradictions in its modern life.
