Schloss Hoya, Medieval château in Hoya, Germany
Schloss Hoya is a medieval castle in Hoya located on the eastern bank of the Weser River. The three-wing structure underwent modifications in 1852 that elevated the central building, and today it houses municipal offices.
The original fortress was built in 1213 and first documented in records from 1233. It was financed by ransom money from Stedinger peasants and served as the seat of the Counts of Hoya until they moved to Nienburg in 1503.
The castle has long been central to Hoya's identity and continues to shape how residents view their town. Many locals see it as a symbol of the city's past and connection to the wider region.
The castle is centrally located in Hoya at Schlossplatz and is easily accessible on foot. While you can view the exterior freely, the interior houses administrative offices that typically require prior arrangement to visit.
The castle originally stood on an island in the Weser River that merged with the mainland at the end of the 17th century. This shift in the landscape transformed it from an isolated fortress into part of the city itself.
