Schloss Hoyerswerda, Renaissance castle in Hoyerswerda, Germany
The three-story castle sits on an elevated position in the center of Hoyerswerda's old town, featuring Renaissance architecture with Baroque elements added in the 18th century.
Originally constructed as a water castle in 1272, the structure underwent multiple reconstructions, including a significant renovation by Seyfried von Promnitz in 1592 following previous war damages.
The castle houses the Stadtmuseum since 1952, presenting exhibitions about regional history from prehistoric times to present day across two floors of exhibition space.
Visitors can access both the city museum and the adjacent zoo, which operates throughout the year with regular guided tours and educational programs for schools.
The castle complex integrates a museum and zoo facility, making it a central educational institution that preserves both cultural heritage and natural sciences.
