Seehundstation Friedrichskoog, Seal rehabilitation center and zoo in Friedrichskoog, Germany
Seehundstation Friedrichskoog is a rescue and care facility for marine mammals on the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The site has indoor and outdoor pools, along with underwater windows and raised viewing areas that let visitors observe the animals from different angles.
The station opened in 1985 to care for orphaned and injured seal pups found along the Schleswig-Holstein coast. Over the years it expanded its capacity and now receives animals from across the wider Wadden Sea region.
The station shows how harbor seals and grey seals live in the Wadden Sea and why they sometimes need human help. Visiting during a feeding session lets you see how the animals respond to people and sound.
Most of the site is on a single level, making it easy to move around for visitors with limited mobility. The animals are most active during the scheduled feeding times, so planning your visit around those moments improves the experience.
This is the only facility in Germany where harbor seals and grey seals are kept together in the same pool system on a permanent basis. The underwater windows make it possible to directly compare how the two species swim and behave below the surface.
