Schloss Landau is a fortified residence with a grand staircase tower and wings on the east and north sides. The structure combines traditional architectural elements from different periods and shows a mix of various building styles.
The site was transformed into a castle around 1330 by Count Heinrich IV of Waldeck, with the first written record appearing in 1339. The building has shaped the region's history since then and served various purposes over the centuries.
The chapel inside the castle shows features from the late 14th century and was later modified. Visitors can still see the traces of these different building phases in the rooms today.
The castle is currently undergoing extensive renovation and transforming into a guest house and seminar center while maintaining private areas. Visitors should check ahead to find out which areas are accessible and how tours can be arranged.
Between 1933 and 1944 the castle served as an agricultural college and later housed retirees until 2012 with therapeutic gardens. This varied history of use shows how the place adapted to different needs across generations.
