Landestrost Castle

Landestrost Castle is a Renaissance fortress with distinctive towers and reinforced walls that underwent numerous renovations from the 16th century through the 20th century. Today it houses various institutions, including a court and a sparkling wine factory that has continued its production in the cellars for over a century.

A duke built this seat in the late 16th century as his seat of government for the region and gave the growing town its name at the same time. The castle was adapted over the centuries and still displays structures from different periods.

The castle served as the residence of dukes and a center of power for the region, which is why it still holds an important place in local identity today. Visitors come here to connect with this heritage and explore the restored rooms that speak to its former significance.

The building is partly damaged and undergoing gradual restoration, so some areas may not be accessible or require caution when exploring. It is advisable to check ahead which parts are open and to wear sturdy footwear when walking the grounds.
