Schloss Liedberg, Medieval château in Korschenbroich, Germany.
Schloss Liedberg is a castle complex in Korschenbroich featuring a central Gothic tower, residential buildings, and defensive walls all built from local sandstone. The structures form a compact fortified site characteristic of medieval military architecture from the region.
The fortress was built in the 13th century on a hilltop and passed between the Archbishops of Cologne and the Duchy of Jülich multiple times. Bombing damage in 1944 was followed by major restoration work beginning in 1968 that returned the site to its current condition.
The chapel from 1707 stands separately from the main castle and now serves as the parish church for the village of Liedberg. It shows how religious life has been woven into the community's identity for generations.
Visitors should expect steep paths and uneven ground since the site sits on a hillside and is not fully accessible for mobility challenges. It helps to wear sturdy shoes and allow time for a leisurely walk through the grounds.
During 2010 renovation work, workers discovered eight old shoes hidden within the Gothic tower walls, including footwear for men, women, and children. These hidden finds offer a rare window into daily life of people from earlier times who lived at or visited the castle.
