Schifffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland

Schifffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland, Maritime museum in Husum, Germany

The Schifffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland is a maritime museum located at Husum's inner harbor that displays ship models, historical documents, and maritime artifacts across four floors. The building from 1902 also contains a full-sized ship bridge from the 1960s where visitors can watch simulations of ship departures.

The museum was established in 1988 and preserves a Dutch merchant sailing vessel that ran aground near Husum centuries ago. This historical foundation reflects the long maritime history of this coastal region.

The exhibition displays information in four languages - German, Danish, English, and French - reflecting how maritime trade connected this region with different parts of Europe. This linguistic variety shows how important shipping was for bringing people and cultures together.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 and is easily reached from the town center. Plan enough time to explore all four floors, especially if you want to interact with the exhibits.

In the basement, a cargo sailing ship from 1600 known as the sugar ship is preserved using a special sugar water solution. This unusual preservation method shows how experts maintain historic wooden vessels for future generations.
