St. Johannes-Evangelist-Kirche

St. Johannes-Evangelist-Kirche, Lutheran church in Auguststrasse, Berlin-Mitte, Germany.

St. Johannes-Evangelist Church is a Lutheran church building on Auguststrasse in Berlin-Mitte, featuring five pairs of rounded arch windows along its side walls and white plastered masonry with an asymmetrical gabled roof. The construction displays restrained Romanesque Revival features with a clear, structured exterior form.

The building was constructed between 1898 and 1900 under architect Bürkner's direction and replaced a small brick chapel that had occupied the same site since 1859. The new construction reflected the modernization efforts of the district during the late 19th century.

The interior displays mosaics created by Peter Ludwig Kowalski in 1953, which divide the church space into distinct sections with baptismal font alcoves. This artistic design has given the building a visual character that remains visible to visitors today.

The interior is accessible during regular services and gatherings of the Antiochian Orthodox congregation of St. Georgios, which has used the building since 2017. It is advisable to check in advance when services or special openings occur to ensure access.

The building houses a Wilhelm Sauer organ from 1900 that has survived multiple renovations and restorations and remains functional. This organ is among the lesser-known historic instruments in Berlin and receives little attention in travel guides.
