St. Peter und Paul

St. Peter und Paul is a Gothic church in Eltville am Rhein featuring an asymmetrical two-nave hall with a western tower crowned by a Baroque roof from 1686. The ground plan reveals traces of multiple expansions that reflect the congregation's growth over the centuries.

Construction of the choir began in 1305 under patronage from the Mainz Peter Foundation, with the choir completed by 1359. A reported host miracle around 1400 sparked pilgrimages that led to the addition of a new south aisle around 1420.

The interior displays late Gothic wall paintings and artistic furnishings that shaped the congregation's spiritual life over centuries. The baptismal font created by Peter Schro in 1517 and other liturgical objects show the artistic care believers invested in their place of worship.

The building is easily accessible in Eltville's town center and welcomes visitors during open hours. Two organs inside contribute to the musical atmosphere, which is especially notable when visiting during worship services.

A reported host miracle in 1400 transformed this church into a pilgrimage destination and triggered major construction expansion. This event gave the place profound spiritual significance that extends beyond its architectural beauty.
