Klosterkirche Elchingen, Benedictine church building in Oberelchingen, Germany
Klosterkirche Elchingen is a Benedictine church in Oberelchingen with a three-nave basilica layout stretching about 60 meters long. The pillars follow Hirsau architectural principles and define the character of the nave.
The monastery was founded before 1120 by Count Adalbert von Ravenstein near the Danube. A fire forced the monks to relocate to the present hilltop location, where the church later underwent baroque renovation.
The ceiling paintings and altar works show the hand of court painter Januarius Zick from the 18th century. They shape the baroque interior you see today and are among the first things you notice when you enter.
The church is open to visitors daily, best explored outside of religious services. Check ahead to find out when services are held to better plan your visit.
Every year on the third Sunday after Pentecost, a procession retraces the historical path around the former monastery walls. This centuries-old tradition maintains the original route through the grounds today.
