Franziskanerkirche Dortmund
Franziskanerkirche Dortmund, Neo-Gothic parish church in central Dortmund, Germany.
The Franziskanerkirche is a three-nave basilica in central Dortmund designed by architect Johannes Franziskus Klomp in neo-Gothic style. The building displays distinctive architectural features from 1902 and contains a modern organ installed in 1969 with 39 registers that were updated in 2018.
A Franciscan monastery stood on this site between 1232 and 1244, with the first documented mention appearing in records from 1278. The present neo-Gothic church building was constructed much later as a new structure during a period of architectural transformation.
The church serves as a gathering place for the local community, where people attend services and religious celebrations throughout the year. Visitors can observe how the space continues to function as the spiritual center for those who worship here.
The building is easy to find in the city center and visitors can attend services or explore the church spaces during open hours. Modern facilities make a visit comfortable, and it is worth checking current opening times in advance.
The remains of Jordan Mai, a respected Franciscan friar, rest inside the church after being transferred here in 1950. This connection links the present building to the long monastic tradition that has continued at this location across the centuries.
