St matthews Melle

St Matthews is the main church of Melle and was built with greenish sandstone, featuring a massive vaulted structure. A modern extension added in 1974 accommodates 800 people and is designed with a tent-shaped folded roof.

The church was founded around 800 and received its first written documentation in 1169, making it one of the oldest in the Diocese of Osnabruck. This gives it a deep connection to the religious history of the region over more than a millennium.

The church houses a collection of vestments and liturgical objects that reflect the religious life across different periods. These items are still used in services today, showing how the parish community has preserved its traditions.

The interior is well structured with plenty of seating to view the architecture and artwork comfortably. It is best to visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the natural lighting throughout the space.

The church roof survived the city fire of 1720, allowing continuous worship while reconstruction was completed in just two years. This event demonstrates the resilience of the structure and its importance to the community.
