St matthews Melle

St Matthews Church stands as the main Catholic church of Gronegau, constructed with greenish sandstone and featuring massive vaulted architecture.

Founded around 800 CE, St Matthews Church received its initial documentation in 1169, making it one of the oldest churches in the Diocese of Osnabruck.

The church interior holds numerous liturgical items from the 17th century, including monstrances, chalices, and candlesticks still used in current ceremonies.

The modern extension, added in 1974, provides seating for 800 people and incorporates a tent-shaped folded roof design.

The church roof structure survived the city fire of 1720, allowing continuous use while reconstruction was completed within two years.
