Sowjetischer Garnisonfriedhof, Military cemetery in Albertstadt district, Dresden, Germany.
The Soviet Garrison Cemetery is a burial ground in the Albertstadt district comprising roughly 1400 grave sites of various types. The grounds hold individual burials of military personnel and their families alongside mass grave sections spread across approximately 2 hectares.
The cemetery was established in May 1945 following the arrival of Soviet forces in Dresden and served as a burial ground for soldiers who died in the conflict. The central obelisk was constructed between 1947 and 1949 as a memorial for those interred there.
The central obelisk dominates the grounds with reliefs displaying Soviet military symbols. The site reflects the presence that Soviet forces left behind in the city.
The grounds are accessible from Marienallee and Kannenhenkelweg, located directly opposite the Northern Cemetery near Dresden's city center. Visitors should approach the site respectfully and allow enough time for a quiet walk through the cemetery.
After German reunification in 1990, the cemetery underwent comprehensive restoration and redesign from 1998 to 2007. This renovation transformed the grounds into an important place of remembrance for shared history.
