Stift Asbeck

The monastery complex includes the Romanesque Church of St. Margarete, an abbess residence, dormitory, gatehouse from 1630, and historic mill.

Bishop Werner von Steußlingen of Münster established the monastery between 1132 and 1151, initially as a double monastery for the Premonstratensian Order.

The monastery museum, located in the Romanesque dormitory, presents an exhibition of church treasures and artifacts from its extensive history.

The monastery buildings now function as event spaces and museum facilities, offering visitors insights into medieval religious architecture and monastic life.

Therese von Zandt, a resident until 1805 and reputed connection to Beethoven, later became mother to composers Friedrich and Norbert Burgmüller.
